Bethany College, founded in 1840 by Disciples of Christ leader Alexander Campbell, is the oldest private college in West Virginia. Its rural Panhandle campus, anchored by the Gothic-revival Old Main building, has changed little in footprint over generations, giving it a distinctly preserved, small-college character within an isolated Appalachian setting.
Bethany's curriculum centers on the liberal arts with particular strength in communication, education, and pre-professional tracks such as pre-med and pre-law, taught in small classes typical of a college this size. The Disciples of Christ heritage is present in the college's history and some programming but does not dominate a curriculum that is broadly liberal-arts in structure.
The isolated rural setting makes Bethany a residential, close-knit campus where most students live on-site for all four years and campus organizations, Greek life, and athletics fill much of student life. Old Main and the surrounding historic quad give the college a visually distinct identity relative to newer regional campuses.
Bethany's small size supports a personal, holistic admissions process rather than a formula-driven one, and the college is known for offering meaningful merit aid to a student body drawn heavily from the surrounding tri-state region as well as further afield.
Its historic tie to the Disciples of Christ and status as West Virginia's oldest private college give Bethany a strong sense of institutional identity relative to its small size, and the rural, self-contained campus means students should expect a quiet, insular setting rather than easy access to a larger city.
