St. Cloud State is a public university on the Mississippi River in central Minnesota, serving the region with broad programs in education, business, engineering, and aviation. It draws a substantial international student population for a school of its size, and a Division I hockey tradition gives the campus an unusually intense sense of shared identity for a non-football-focused school.
Business and education are the largest programs, with engineering and an aviation program, tied to a regional airport, giving St. Cloud State a few genuine specialties beyond the broad regional-university mold. The international student community is large enough to be a visible part of campus life rather than a token presence.
Hockey is central to campus culture; the Huskies' Division I program draws serious local and regional attention, and game nights are a major fixture of the social calendar. The river setting and central Minnesota location put the campus within a manageable drive of the Twin Cities.
As part of the Minnesota State system, admission is largely predictable based on coursework and grades.
The aviation program is a real, if less visible, specialty, and the size of the international student body is unusual for a regional public university in this part of the Midwest.
