The University of Olivet, in south-central Michigan and recently renamed from Olivet College, was founded by abolitionists and has long claimed one of the earliest records in the country of admitting students regardless of race or sex. It pairs a small residential liberal-arts core with a rare, dedicated undergraduate program in insurance and risk management.
Insurance and risk management is Olivet's modern signature — one of only a handful of dedicated undergraduate programs of its kind in the country — and it gives students a direct, well-worn pipeline into an industry that actively recruits from very few campuses. The rest of the curriculum follows a conventional small liberal-arts pattern.
The campus is small and historic, set in a small Michigan town, with a close residential community typical of a college this size.
Admission is accessible and personal, typical of a small liberal-arts college without heavy competitive screening.
Insurance and risk management graduates are recruited directly by insurance-industry employers specifically because so few colleges offer a dedicated undergraduate program in the field.
The insurance program's national rarity makes it a specific, deliberate draw for students targeting that industry, distinct from the college's otherwise conventional small liberal-arts identity.
