UNE is a private university split between an oceanfront campus in Biddeford, Maine, where the Saco River meets the Atlantic, and a health-sciences campus in Portland, giving it a dual identity as both a marine-science and a health-professions institution.
UNE is Maine's principal hub for health professions, with osteopathic medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy, and nursing programs that give it a graduate and professional footprint larger than its undergraduate liberal-arts side. Its marine sciences program takes direct advantage of the Biddeford campus's coastal location, with hands-on access to tidal and ocean environments.
The Biddeford campus's oceanfront setting is a defining feature of undergraduate life, while the Portland campus serves mostly graduate and professional students in the health programs.
Health-professions graduates, particularly in osteopathic medicine and pharmacy, feed directly into New England's clinical workforce, and UNE's name carries real weight regionally in those fields.
Undergraduates and graduate or professional students largely experience two different campuses, so students should be clear on which campus their program is based on before enrolling.
