The University of Maine at Farmington is the public liberal-arts campus within the University of Maine System, located in a small town in the western Maine foothills. It is built around a teaching-college mission rather than research, with a history and continuing reputation centered on preparing teachers.
Teacher education is UMF's historic strength and still its identity, alongside creative writing and environmental and outdoor-focused programs that take advantage of the surrounding foothills terrain. Class sizes are small for a public institution, closer to what a private liberal arts college offers, at public in-state pricing.
Farmington is a small, rural western Maine town, and outdoor recreation — hiking, skiing, and access to Maine's mountains — is a real part of student life rather than incidental. The campus itself is compact and walkable, and the town-gown relationship is close given the town's small size.
Students who want serious outdoor access alongside small-college academics at public prices are the natural fit; it is a quieter, more rural alternative to Maine's larger public campuses.
