Overview

An urban public research university on New Orleans's Lakefront, near Lake Pontchartrain, serving a largely local, commuter-heavy student body. Its identity is tied closely to the city itself — jazz, film, and hospitality programs draw directly on New Orleans's cultural industries.

Academics

Naval architecture and marine engineering is a genuine rarity — one of only a handful of such programs in the country — reflecting the university's proximity to Gulf Coast shipbuilding and maritime industry. Jazz studies, film, and hospitality and tourism programs are similarly grounded in the city's actual industries rather than abstract offerings, giving students direct access to working professionals in those fields.

Campus & student life

The Lakefront campus sits apart from the French Quarter tourist core, giving it a quieter, more residential feel than the city's reputation might suggest, though its programs keep students connected to downtown culture and industry. Most students commute or live off campus, and the university has rebuilt its enrollment and facilities in the years since Hurricane Katrina.

Getting in

Admission is generally accessible for Louisiana residents, with specialty programs like naval architecture and jazz studies drawing a more national and international applicant pool than the rest of the university.

After graduation

Naval architecture and marine engineering graduates place directly into Gulf Coast shipbuilding and offshore industry employers, an unusually direct pipeline for the field; jazz and film graduates draw on New Orleans's working cultural economy for early opportunities.

Worth knowing

The naval architecture program is a legitimate national draw despite the university's regional, commuter-heavy overall profile — a specialty worth knowing about specifically, not a general strength across the school.
