Viterbo University is a private Catholic Franciscan university in La Crosse, Wisconsin, set in a scenic city along the Mississippi River. Nursing is its largest and defining program, but the university has also built a genuine reputation in theatre and music.
Nursing dominates the academic identity and draws students specifically for its clinical training and placement record, while education is a solid secondary strength. The theatre and music programs run with a conservatory-style intensity unusual for a university this size, giving performing arts students a more immersive training experience than a typical small department offers.
The pairing of a major nursing program with a genuinely serious conservatory-style performing arts tradition is an unusual combination — most universities lean toward one identity or the other — and gives Viterbo two distinct, well-regarded reasons students choose it.
