The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science is a single-purpose institution devoted entirely to funeral service education, among the oldest schools of its kind in the country. Students study embalming, restorative art, funeral directing, and the business and regulatory side of running a funeral home, with laboratory and clinical practice built directly into the curriculum. It functions less like a traditional liberal-arts college and more like a professional training program preparing graduates for state licensure.
Coursework combines science — anatomy, microbiology, chemistry — with the specific technical skills of embalming and restorative art, plus funeral service management, grief support, and the legal and ethical dimensions of the profession. Instruction leans heavily on hands-on laboratory work in embalming labs rather than lecture alone, and the program is built to align directly with state board licensing exam requirements.
Graduates move on to state licensing exams and apprenticeships at funeral homes, and the program's age and standing give it a strong pipeline into the funeral service industry regionally and beyond. Many students already have a funeral home or family business connection before enrolling.
This is a narrow, vocational institution rather than a comprehensive college — there is no broader liberal-arts curriculum and no residential campus life in the traditional sense. Prospective students should expect coursework to include direct embalming lab practice from early in the program.
