Lake Erie College, in Painesville, Ohio east of Cleveland, was founded in 1856 with roots as a women's seminary and is now coeducational, with a historic small-city campus near the shore of Lake Erie.
The college is best known nationally for its equestrian programs, supported by a full on-campus equestrian center that draws students specifically for riding and equine studies; business, education, and biology round out its other notable programs.
The historic campus sits in a small Ohio city with easy access to the Cleveland area, and the equestrian center is a visible, defining feature of daily campus life for students in those programs, alongside more typical small-college social and residential life.
The equestrian program is a genuine draw - Lake Erie fields competitive riding teams and the on-campus facility is a differentiator few small colleges in the region can match.
