Manhattan University is a Catholic university in the Lasallian tradition, founded by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, located, despite its name, in the leafy Riverdale section of the Bronx rather than Manhattan itself. It recently renamed itself from Manhattan College to Manhattan University, though the shift is recent enough that many still know it by the older name. The campus sits at the northern end of the 1 subway line, giving students a genuine green, gated campus feel while still being a direct train ride from midtown Manhattan.
Engineering, education, and business are the university's longstanding core strengths, with engineering in particular carrying real weight in New York's construction and infrastructure industries. The Lasallian tradition emphasizes practical, accessible education historically aimed at working and middle-class students, a legacy still visible in the university's professional, career-oriented program mix. Class sizes stay modest, and the Catholic identity runs through campus life more than through an especially heavy core-curriculum religious requirement.
The Riverdale campus is unusually green and self-contained for a New York City school, gated and quiet compared to the Bronx neighborhoods around it, while still delivering a direct subway ride to Manhattan's internships, culture, and job market. Catholic identity and Lasallian service tradition show up in campus organizations and community-engagement programs more than in strict religious requirements.
The engineering program's alumni network runs deep in New York City's construction, civil engineering, and infrastructure sectors, a genuinely useful professional pipeline built over generations of graduates staying in the metro area. Business and education graduates likewise tend to stay regionally connected, drawing on a tight, locally concentrated alumni base.
