Florida Memorial University is a private historically Black university in Miami Gardens, the only HBCU in South Florida, with roots in Baptist higher education going back to the 19th century. Its campus community reflects deep, longstanding ties to Miami's Black and Caribbean neighborhoods.
Florida Memorial is known distinctively for aviation, including actual flight training, a rare offering among HBCUs and among small private universities generally. Education and business round out its other established programs, taught in a small-college setting within a major metro area.
The Miami Gardens campus places students inside South Florida's broader Black and Caribbean cultural life, and the university's identity is closely tied to that community rather than to campus-contained traditions alone. Athletics and campus organizations follow patterns typical of small HBCUs, with a strong sense of institutional pride tied to the school's history.
As with many HBCUs, Florida Memorial's process weighs potential and context alongside grades, and the university has a tradition of serving first-generation college students from the South Florida area and beyond.
The aviation program, including flight training, is a genuine point of distinction worth flagging for students interested in that field — it is not common among either HBCUs or small private universities of Florida Memorial's size.
