Nazareth University is a private university in Pittsford, a suburb of Rochester, New York, founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph and now religiously unaffiliated. It has grown from a teacher-training and nursing college into a mid-sized university with a strong professional and health-sciences identity, while retaining a smaller liberal arts college's residential feel.
Health and human services fields are the clear center of gravity — physical therapy, speech-language pathology, nursing, social work, and music therapy all have established reputations, several with accredited graduate programs undergraduates can pipeline into. Education is a historic strength dating to the college's founding mission. On-campus clinics give health-sciences students direct clinical experience working with the surrounding community rather than only off-site placements.
The suburban Pittsford campus is quieter and more residential than an urban Rochester setting, with easy access to the city for internships and clinical placements. Athletics and a modest Greek presence exist without overshadowing the professional-programs identity that most students come for.
Applications tend to be reviewed with real attention to intended major, especially for the competitive clinical programs, where demonstrated interest in the health field carries weight alongside grades.
Graduates in physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and nursing have strong regional placement into Rochester-area hospitals and clinics, and licensure and certification pass rates in these programs are a point of institutional pride.
Several health-sciences programs are structured as accelerated or direct-entry pipelines into graduate credentials, such as a doctorate in physical therapy, which is worth understanding early since it shapes the four-year course sequence.
