Davis & Elkins College is a small private college in Elkins, West Virginia, in the Allegheny Highlands, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. It sits in a mountain town rather than a college town, and its identity is closely tied to Appalachian culture and outdoor life.
D&E offers a liberal-arts core alongside pre-professional programs, with particular attention to nursing and outdoor- and recreation-oriented fields that make use of the surrounding mountains. Its Augusta Heritage Center, a nationally known summer program in traditional Appalachian music, dance, and craft, gives the college a cultural identity well beyond its size; folklorists and musicians travel to Elkins specifically for it.
The campus is small and rural, with the town of Elkins offering limited off-campus options, so campus life is fairly self-contained. Outdoor recreation, including hiking and whitewater in the surrounding national forest, is a real part of student life given the location.
Davis & Elkins admits most applicants who meet basic academic thresholds and looks for fit with its small, close-knit community; it is not a highly selective admissions environment.
The Augusta Heritage Center is the college's most distinctive asset and is worth knowing about specifically for students interested in traditional music, folklore, or craft, since its summer workshops draw a national audience separate from the undergraduate population.
