Southern University Law Center is the public historically Black law school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, part of the Southern University System. Founded in 1947, it exists to train lawyers and has long served as a primary path into the legal profession for Black attorneys across Louisiana. It enrolls law students exclusively, with no undergraduate population.
The curriculum follows a standard JD course of study but is delivered with particular attention to access, including an evening division that allows working students to complete a law degree part time — a structure not common among law schools generally.
Southern Law's review considers the whole applicant, including practical circumstances like the need to work while studying, reflecting its access-oriented mission rather than a purely numbers-driven admit process.
A large share of Louisiana's Black attorneys, judges, and elected officials trace their legal education to Southern Law, giving the school an outsized role in the state's legal and civic leadership relative to its size.
The evening JD program is Southern Law's most distinctive feature, letting students continue working while earning a law degree — an option many law schools, especially historically Black ones, do not offer.
