Mount Angel Seminary, at Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon's Willamette Valley, is a Benedictine Catholic seminary and one of the older seminaries in the American West. Run by the Benedictine monks of the abbey, it forms Catholic seminarians through sequential study in philosophy and theology alongside monastic-influenced spiritual formation.
The seminary sits atop a butte overlooking the Willamette Valley, sharing its hilltop campus with the working Benedictine abbey itself, which gives daily life a distinctly monastic rhythm built around communal prayer alongside academic study. The campus library, designed by the noted architect Alvar Aalto, is a well-known piece of modernist architecture and a notable landmark in its own right.
The abbey's active monastic community shapes seminary life more directly than at a typical diocesan seminary — students live alongside working monks and participate in a schedule oriented around communal prayer as much as coursework. The Aalto-designed library is a genuine architectural draw independent of the seminary's religious mission.
