Emporia State University, in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, is historically the state's teachers college, and that identity still defines it. The National Teachers Hall of Fame is located on campus, a rare physical marker of an institutional legacy that most schools only claim in mission statements.
Education remains the heart of the university, but its school of library and information management is nationally known and draws students well beyond Kansas for library science specifically, an unusual pocket of national reputation inside an otherwise regional public university.
Emporia is a small, affordable residential campus in a rural Flint Hills setting, with a close-knit feel that comes from modest size rather than deliberate design.
Admission is accessible and not highly selective, consistent with the university's role as an affordable regional option, though the library science graduate program draws a more competitive, self-selected applicant pool.
Education graduates place steadily into Kansas school districts, and library science graduates go on to library and information roles nationally, a reach well beyond the university's regional undergraduate profile.
