Overview

Christopher Newport University, in Newport News, Virginia, is a public university that deliberately styles itself after a small liberal-arts college rather than a large state university. It is residential and undergraduate-focused by design, with an institutional emphasis on close faculty contact and campus-wide programming meant to build a tight community despite being publicly funded.

Academics

The Presidential Leadership Program is the university's most distinctive academic offering, layering leadership development and civic-engagement coursework on top of standard majors. Class sizes are kept notably small for a public institution, and the curriculum leans into a broad liberal-arts foundation across the sciences, humanities, and pre-professional fields rather than concentrating around one or two signature programs.

Campus & student life

The campus is architecturally striking and unusually uniform, built almost entirely in a neoclassical style over the past few decades, which gives it a more polished, planned look than most public universities its age. Nearly all students live on campus, and the compact, walkable layout supports a strong residential social culture built around student organizations, campus traditions, and Division I athletics at the mid-major level.

Getting in

Admission is more holistic than at many public universities, weighing essays and leadership involvement alongside academic record, in keeping with the university's small-college self-image. Students often choose CNU specifically for the promise of a private-college-style experience at public-university cost.

Worth knowing

The university's insistence on residential, small-class, small-college character despite public funding is the core thing that distinguishes it from most other state universities in Virginia, and is usually why students pick it.
