Jarvis Christian University is a historically Black university in rural Hawkins, Texas, founded in 1912 with ties to the Disciples of Christ. It serves a small, close-knit student body focused on access and support for first-generation students from East Texas and beyond, continuing a founding mission to educate Black students in a part of the state that had few options for them at the time.
Programs concentrate in business, education, and the sciences, taught in small classes with faculty who know students individually. The curriculum leans practical and career-oriented, preparing graduates for teaching, business, and health-related fields rather than emphasizing research or a wide elective catalog.
The campus sits in rural Hawkins, well outside any large city, which makes it a self-contained community — most students live on campus, and organizations, chapel, and athletics carry much of the social life. It is small enough that students and staff generally know each other by name.
As one of Texas's few HBCUs, Jarvis Christian carries a specific historical mission — access for Black students in a rural region — that still shapes who it recruits and how it supports them, including strong first-generation student services.
