Overview
The University of San Diego is a Catholic university whose Spanish Renaissance-style campus sits on a hill overlooking Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean, giving it one of the more distinctive physical settings among American Catholic universities.
Academics
Business, engineering, and nursing are established professional strengths, and the university's Catholic identity carries through academically in a genuine peace-and-justice emphasis — the Kroc School of Peace Studies is a distinctive feature not found at comparable Catholic institutions, reflecting a deliberate commitment to social-justice-oriented scholarship alongside more conventional professional programs.
Campus & student life
The Spanish Renaissance architecture, built around a central plaza-like quad, gives the campus a cohesive, intentional look, and the Southern California setting supports an outdoor-oriented student culture — sailing and other water sports have a natural home given the bay-front location. Athletics compete as the Toreros.
Getting in
Admission is holistic, with the university's Catholic mission and values-oriented essays factoring into the process alongside academic credentials, and interviews or values-alignment questions are more common here than at a purely secular university of similar selectivity.
After graduation
Business and nursing graduates place well with Southern California employers and hospital systems, and the university's diocesan Catholic network gives it a distinct alumni identity within Catholic higher education.
Worth knowing
Prospective students should know USD is diocesan Catholic, not Jesuit — a meaningful distinction from schools like Santa Clara or Georgetown — and that the Kroc School's peace-studies focus is a genuine academic differentiator, not just a values statement.
