University of Houston-Clear Lake is a campus of the University of Houston System located next to NASA's Johnson Space Center, founded partly to serve the region's space-program workforce needs. It historically served a large share of transfer and graduate students rather than a traditional four-year first-year class, reflecting its origins as an upper-division and graduate institution before it later opened to lower-division undergraduates.
Sciences, engineering, and education are established strengths, with natural ties to the aerospace and space-industry employers clustered around Johnson Space Center.
The wooded campus sits between Houston and Galveston Bay, with a quieter, more suburban feel than the University of Houston's main campus, and a student population that skews somewhat older and more part-time given its transfer-heavy history.
