Indiana University Northwest is a regional campus of the Indiana University system in Gary, serving the industrial Calumet region in the state's northwest corner, close enough to Chicago that many students commute across the state line. It is fundamentally a commuter campus, built to serve working students and those staying close to home rather than a residential four-year experience.
Health professions (including nursing), business, and criminal justice are the most popular programs, reflecting the workforce needs of the surrounding region, and students earn an Indiana University degree at a regional-campus scale and structure.
Admission standards are accessible relative to IU's flagship Bloomington campus, and the campus serves as an entry point into the IU system for students who might not otherwise consider a residential four-year college.
Because IU Northwest is a commuter campus, campus life and student traditions are much lighter than at a residential IU campus — students should expect a practical, workforce-oriented experience built around evening and flexible scheduling rather than dorm-and-quad college life.
