The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is a private Baptist university in Belton, in central Texas, with roots tracing back to Baylor Female College before it relocated and became coeducational under its current name. That history has left a residential, chapel-centered campus culture that takes its Christian identity seriously rather than treating it as a formality. Nursing, education, and business are the largest programs, drawing heavily from the Texas job market that surrounds the school in the Killeen-Temple corridor.
Nursing is the university's signature program, feeding directly into the healthcare systems of central Texas, alongside longstanding strength in teacher education and business. Class sizes stay small relative to Texas's large public universities, letting faculty know students individually. Chapel and faith-integration requirements run through general education alongside the professional majors.
Chapel attendance and a visibly practiced Baptist campus culture shape day-to-day student life more than at many nominally religious schools. Belton's small-town central Texas setting sits within easy reach of Austin, Waco, and the Fort Cavazos military community, which supplies a meaningful share of students and their families.
The university's history as a women's college, first as Baylor Female College and later Mary Hardin-Baylor College, predates its current coeducational, Baptist university identity — a lineage that shows up in campus tradition even though the student body has long been mixed-gender.
