Montana State University-Northern is a public university in Havre, on Montana's Hi-Line near the Canadian border - one of the more remote public university locations in the country. It serves a largely rural Montana student body and is known for practical, hands-on technical training more than a conventional liberal-arts identity.
Diesel technology and agricultural mechanics are the university's clearest specialties, built around hands-on shop and lab work that draws employers from across the region for hiring. Nursing and education are also established programs, rounding out a curriculum aimed squarely at regional workforce needs.
Havre is a small, isolated town, and the surrounding Hi-Line region is sparsely populated ranching and farming country. Campus life is modest in scale, and many students come from, and plan to return to, rural Montana communities.
The technical programs, especially diesel technology, carry a reputation among regional employers that outpaces the university's overall size and name recognition - it functions almost like a specialized trade program layered onto a public university.
