Georgia Southwestern State University is a public university in Americus, in rural southwest Georgia, and the alma mater of Jimmy Carter. It serves a largely regional student population, with career-focused programs delivered at a lower cost than Georgia's larger public flagships, on a small, residential campus.
Nursing, education, and business are the university's core programs, oriented toward regional workforce needs in southwest Georgia. Class sizes are small, and the university's mission leans toward teaching and access rather than research.
