Northwestern is a private research university on the Lake Michigan shore in Evanston, just north of Chicago, that pairs Big Ten athletics and school spirit with an academic intensity matching the most selective universities in the country. Its quarter-system calendar gives the academic year a different rhythm than most peer schools, packing more distinct courses into four years but compressing each term into a faster pace.
Medill School of Journalism is one of the nation's most recognized journalism and integrated-marketing programs, and the university's theater and performing arts programs, housed in the School of Communication, are similarly top-tier and have produced a disproportionate share of working actors and writers. Engineering through McCormick, economics, and pre-professional tracks are all strong, and the quarter system lets students take more distinct courses across four years, though it compresses each term's workload into a faster pace than a semester calendar.
Evanston's lakefront setting gives Northwestern a genuinely scenic campus, with the Lakefill quad sitting right on Lake Michigan, and easy access to Chicago by train for students who want a bigger city on weekends. Big Ten football and basketball bring a real athletics culture despite the university's academic reputation, and the mix of pre-professional ambition, strong arts programs, and Greek life gives campus life a wider range of subcultures than a typical research university offers.
Northwestern's process is holistic, and applicants to Medill, the theater and performance programs, or other specialized schools within the university often apply directly into that program rather than to the university broadly, so demonstrated fit and a clear sense of purpose matter, especially for arts and journalism applicants who may audition or submit a portfolio.
Graduates move strongly into journalism and media, performing arts, consulting, and finance, with an alumni network especially deep in Chicago's business and media community and a notable concentration of working professionals in entertainment given Medill and the theater program's reputations.
Northwestern's undergraduate admission is by school — Medill, the School of Communication, McCormick engineering, and Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences each have their own application track and sometimes their own supplemental requirements, which matters for students who already know which field they want to pursue.

Interviews: Northwestern no longer offers alumni interviews as part of the application process; applicants may instead pursue informal alumni 'Cat Chats' or submit an optional Glimpse video.
We want to be sure we're considering your application in the context of your personal experiences: What aspects of your background (your identity, your school setting, your community, your household, etc.) have most shaped how you see yourself engaging in Northwestern's community, be it academically, extracurricularly, culturally, politically, socially, or otherwise?
Painting 'The Rock' is a tradition at Northwestern that invites all forms of expression—students promote campus events or extracurricular groups, support social or activist causes, show their Wildcat spirit (what we call 'Purple Pride'), celebrate their culture, and more. What would you paint on The Rock, and why?
Northwestern fosters a distinctively interdisciplinary culture. We believe discovery and innovation thrive at the intersection of diverse ideas, perspectives, and academic interests. Within this setting, if you could dream up an undergraduate class, research project, or creative effort (a start-up, a design prototype, a performance, etc.), what would it be? Who might be some ideal classmates or collaborators?
