Edgewood is a Dominican Catholic university in Madison, Wisconsin, on wooded grounds along Lake Wingra, a short distance from the state capitol. It offers a personal-scale, small-college alternative in a city whose higher-education identity is otherwise dominated by the large public flagship, the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Nursing and education are the strongest programs, and small class sizes are a consistent point of contrast with the much larger classes typical at Wisconsin's public options. The curriculum carries the Dominican order's intellectual tradition, though the student body is religiously mixed.
The Lake Wingra setting gives the campus a wooded, quiet feel while still being within Madison, so students can reach the city's restaurants, music, and public-university-driven energy without attending a school of that scale. It functions as a smaller, calmer counterpoint to UW-Madison for students who want a Madison address without a large-university experience.
Choosing Edgewood over UW-Madison is often a direct, deliberate tradeoff — students want the city and its resources but a small-college scale and Catholic character instead of a huge public flagship.
