Catawba College is a liberal arts college in Salisbury, North Carolina, with United Church of Christ heritage, set between Charlotte and the surrounding Piedmont countryside. Its environmental identity is a genuine, distinguishing feature among small Southern liberal arts colleges.
The Center for the Environment and an on-campus ecological preserve give environmental science students real field research space rather than just classroom instruction, and the program has built a solid regional reputation on that basis. Theatre arts and business are the college's other notable programs, with theatre benefiting from a genuinely active production schedule for a college this size.
The ecological preserve functions as a living classroom and gathering space on campus, an unusual amenity that shapes both coursework and everyday campus experience for students well outside the environmental science major. Salisbury's small-city setting keeps the surroundings quiet while Charlotte remains a reasonable drive away.
The ecological preserve and Center for the Environment are Catawba's clearest points of distinction — few colleges this size have dedicated that much real campus land and institutional focus to environmental study, and it shows up in the college's reputation beyond just its size.
