Overview

Mitchell College, on the Thames River in New London, Connecticut, is a small private college best known nationally for its work with students who learn differently. Its integrated academic support model and coaching-heavy approach to instruction are central to the college's identity rather than an add-on program, built specifically around students with ADHD, learning disabilities, or executive-functioning needs alongside a broader liberal arts curriculum.

Academics

Mitchell's academic support programs embed coaching, individualized accommodations, and study-skills instruction directly into the student experience, with small classes across the college reinforcing that closely advised model. Degree programs run through career-relevant fields like business, criminal justice, and marine studies alongside a traditional liberal arts core.

Campus & student life

The waterfront campus on the Thames River gives Mitchell a genuine beachfront feel unusual for a small New England college, and student life leans small and close-knit, with strong emphasis on personal relationships between students and staff. Athletics and a residential-first culture round out a campus built for a supportive, low-pressure transition to college.

Getting in

Mitchell's admissions process is holistic and known for looking past standardized test performance, particularly for students whose learning profile doesn't show up well on paper; its enhanced learning-support programs typically require a separate application and additional fee beyond general admission.

Worth knowing

Mitchell's strength in supporting students who learn differently is a genuine, nationally recognized draw rather than a generic accommodations office, and families should know the enhanced support track is usually a distinct, additional-cost program layered on top of standard enrollment.
