Seton Hall University is a Catholic university in South Orange, New Jersey, about 14 miles from Manhattan, combining a traditional Catholic mission with a practical, professionally minded curriculum.
The School of Diplomacy and International Relations is a distinctive, well-regarded program uncommon at a school of Seton Hall's size, drawing students interested in foreign service and international careers; business and nursing are also established strengths. The university operates one of the older Catholic law schools in the region in Newark, giving pre-law students a natural in-house pipeline.
Big East basketball is central to campus identity and school spirit, giving a mid-size university a high-visibility athletics presence disproportionate to its size. The South Orange campus is suburban and residential, with Manhattan close enough for regular access to internships and city life without the campus itself feeling urban.
Seton Hall is holistic in review, and its Catholic identity and mission come through in the application, though — as with most Catholic universities of its type — it does not require applicants to be Catholic.
The Diplomacy School has a genuine track record placing graduates into foreign service, international NGOs, and government roles, a distinctive outcome pipeline not common at schools this size, and the Newark law school gives pre-law students a clear in-house path.
The combination of a serious diplomacy program and Big East basketball prominence gives Seton Hall a somewhat bifurcated identity — a student's experience can look quite different depending on which side of that draws them.
