Central Connecticut State University, in New Britain, is the oldest public university in the state, founded in the mid-nineteenth century as a normal school, and it has remained closely tied to preparing Connecticut's teachers ever since. Most students come from — and after graduation stay within — the greater Hartford region, giving the university a strong regional identity.
Teacher education is still a signature strength and the university's historical core, but business, criminology, and engineering technology have grown into popular and well-regarded programs in their own right. The engineering technology offerings, in particular, fill a niche between traditional engineering and hands-on technical training that serves the manufacturing and industrial employers of central Connecticut.
New Britain gives the campus a compact, city-adjacent feel, and proximity to Hartford means many students maintain ties to jobs, internships, or family in the capital region throughout their time in school. Blue Devils athletics compete at the Division I level in several sports, a notable step up in visibility for a regional university of its size.
Admission emphasizes access for Connecticut residents, particularly those interested in teacher preparation, criminal justice, or business, over a highly selective review process.
Graduates fill a large share of teaching positions in Connecticut's public schools, and the business and criminal justice programs feed steadily into the state's corporate and public-sector employers in the Hartford area.
