A small campus of the University of Minnesota system in Crookston, in the Red River Valley of northwestern Minnesota near the North Dakota border. It grew out of an agricultural school and still carries that identity, while also serving a large body of online students who earn the same University of Minnesota degree as the on-campus population.
Strongest in agriculture, natural resources, equine science, and applied fields such as golf and turf management, all tied to the surrounding farm economy. Class sizes are small and hands-on, with real farm and lab facilities on campus. A long-running program issuing every on-campus student a laptop made Crookston an early adopter of that model.
Rural and small-town, far from any large city, with a close-knit, low-key campus culture rather than an urban or high-energy one. The on-campus population is small relative to the university's overall online enrollment.
The online division is large relative to the residential campus, so prospective students should be clear on which track they are choosing — the on-campus agricultural and equine programs, or a fully remote degree-completion path.
