Rhodes College is a private liberal arts college in midtown Memphis, its collegiate-gothic campus set directly across from Overton Park, one of the city's largest green spaces. It combines a classic small-college liberal arts model with an unusually deep set of connections to its host city, particularly through medicine and the arts.
The standout academic feature is a longstanding research partnership with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which gives Rhodes undergraduates genuine research opportunities in pediatric medicine rare for a college this size — a major draw for premed and biology-track students. The college also maintains a strong honor code tradition that shapes both academic culture (self-scheduled, often unproctored exams) and campus governance.
Memphis itself functions as an extension of campus life — students engage heavily with the city's music, food, and nonprofit and social-justice scenes, aided by a curriculum that encourages community-based learning. The gothic quadrangles and proximity to Overton Park give the campus a self-contained, traditional collegiate feel even within a mid-sized city.
Applications are read holistically, with essays and an emphasis on intellectual curiosity and community engagement; students should expect the college to weigh fit with its honor code culture and city-engaged learning model, not just numbers.
Premed placement is a genuine strength given the St. Jude partnership, and Rhodes has a strong record of graduates going on to medical school, law school, and other graduate programs relative to its size. The alumni network is concentrated in the Mid-South but reaches nationally through medicine and law.
The honor code is not symbolic — it governs real academic practices like unproctored testing, and students should understand it as a defining part of daily campus life, not a ceremonial tradition.
