The University of Holy Cross is a private Catholic university in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, on the West Bank of the Mississippi, founded by the Marianites of Holy Cross. It serves a largely local, commuter-heavy population and carries a service-oriented Catholic mission into fields tied to community need.
Nursing and health sciences are the university's clearest strength, alongside counseling and education programs that feed the New Orleans area's schools and clinics. Programs are built with working and returning students in mind, with a practical, licensure-oriented focus rather than a broad liberal-arts core.
The Algiers campus is small and residential life is limited; most students commute from across the New Orleans metro area, and the rhythm of campus is shaped more by class schedules and clinical placements than by traditional dorm-and-quad college life.
Admission review is straightforward rather than highly competitive, with an emphasis on readiness for professional programs like nursing that carry their own additional academic requirements once a student is enrolled.
The Catholic mission is present in the university's identity and service orientation but is not as strictly enforced in daily student life as at more doctrinally conservative Catholic schools; it functions as a values framework more than a set of behavioral rules.
