Overview
Eastern Mennonite University is a Christian university in Harrisonburg, Virginia, rooted in the Anabaptist and Mennonite peace tradition. That heritage runs through the institution's identity more thoroughly than at most denominational colleges, shaping both its academic centers and its everyday campus culture.
Academics
The Center for Justice and Peacebuilding, which trains students and international practitioners in conflict transformation and restorative justice, is internationally recognized and gives the university a niche reputation well beyond its size. Nursing and education are also well-established undergraduate programs. A cross-cultural study requirement sends most students off campus, often internationally, for an extended block of their undergraduate years - a defining structural feature of the curriculum rather than an optional add-on.
Campus & student life
Harrisonburg is a mid-sized Shenandoah Valley city, giving the campus more surrounding amenities than a purely rural setting would. Themes of service, sustainability, and peacebuilding run through campus organizations and events, consistent with the Mennonite heritage.
Getting in
Admissions are holistic, with the university's peace-and-justice mission and community-service record often weighed alongside academic credentials.
After graduation
Graduates of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding go on to careers and further graduate study in conflict resolution and international development, giving the university an alumni network with real depth in those niches.
Worth knowing
The cross-cultural study requirement is a genuine graduation requirement, not an optional study-abroad option, and it shapes most students' four-year schedule and budget.
