Marietta College is a private liberal-arts college in Marietta, Ohio, at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers in a historic river town. It has built a reputation disproportionate to its size in one field: petroleum engineering, an unusual offering for a small liberal-arts college.
The petroleum engineering program has decades of industry ties and is the college's signature technical strength. Leadership studies, through the McDonough Center, is another well-known program built around hands-on leadership development rather than classroom theory alone, and long-term care administration is a further career-specific niche. Class sizes are small across the board.
The historic river-town setting shapes campus character, with a walkable, small-city backdrop rather than an isolated rural campus. Athletics and Greek life are both present but modest in scale, consistent with the college's size.
The petroleum engineering program is genuinely notable — one of only a handful of undergraduate programs of its kind in the country — and draws students specifically for that reason, giving Marietta a technical-career identity unusual for a liberal-arts college its size.
