Gratz College, in Melrose Park just outside Philadelphia, is the oldest independent college of Jewish studies in North America, founded in 1895. It has evolved from a school that originally trained Hebrew teachers into a small institution offering graduate and certificate programs in Jewish education, Jewish communal leadership, and, distinctively, Holocaust and genocide studies.
Gratz's Holocaust and Genocide Studies program is among its most recognized offerings, drawing students interested in historical research, education, or human-rights work rather than Jewish studies alone. Most programs are graduate-level, and the college has shifted heavily toward online and hybrid delivery, so the student experience looks more like a specialized graduate school than a traditional undergraduate campus.
Because it is so specialized and largely graduate and online, Gratz does not offer the residential-campus experience of a traditional college — students are typically working professionals, educators, or communal-service staff pursuing a focused credential in Jewish studies or Holocaust education rather than a first bachelor's degree.
