Montevallo is Alabama's designated public liberal-arts college, located in a small town near the state's geographic center. It offers a more intimate academic experience than Alabama's larger public universities, built around small classes and close faculty contact.
Education, communication, and the arts are traditional areas of strength, consistent with the college's liberal-arts mission and smaller scale, which supports discussion-based classes rather than large lectures.
The Olmsted-designed, brick-street campus is one of the more architecturally distinctive in the state. "College Night," a century-old student-run tradition pitting the Purples against the Golds in an elaborate homecoming competition, is the defining event of the school's social calendar and a point of significant campus pride.
College Night is not a minor tradition; it involves months of student-led planning and performance and is often the reason alumni describe Montevallo as having an unusually strong sense of community for a public college.
