UConn Avery Point is the University of Connecticut's shoreline campus in Groton, sitting directly on Long Island Sound on a former estate property. It is the university's dedicated home for marine sciences and maritime studies, and many students spend their first two years here in other UConn majors before transferring to the main Storrs campus.
Marine sciences and maritime studies are the campus's signature strength, with direct water access supporting hands-on coursework that a landlocked campus cannot easily replicate; the Avery Point location gives students in these fields field and lab access unusual for an undergraduate program.
The campus is small and scenic, with limited traditional residential infrastructure compared to Storrs, and much of student life for the general population is built around a two-year plan of transferring to the main campus rather than a full four-year experience at Avery Point itself.
A student choosing Avery Point should be clear on which track they're on — a two-year stepping stone into a UConn major at Storrs, versus one of the marine science or maritime programs that can be substantially completed at Avery Point itself given its coastal facilities.
