Overview
Wheeling University is a Catholic university on a hillside campus in Wheeling, West Virginia, in the state's northern panhandle along the Ohio River. Founded by the Jesuits, the university retains a Catholic identity and Jesuit-influenced mission even as its formal structure has evolved in recent years, and it serves as a primary higher-education anchor for the upper Ohio Valley region.
Academics
Wheeling is particularly known for nursing and health sciences, alongside a broader set of liberal-arts and professional programs delivered in small classes. The Jesuit heritage brings an emphasis on values-based, whole-person education into programs across the university.
Campus & student life
The hillside campus overlooks the Ohio Valley and offers a close, residential college experience in a small city setting, with most students living on campus and campus life organized around a tight-knit community rather than a large-university social scene.
Getting in
Wheeling's admissions process is personal and holistic, reflecting both its small scale and its Jesuit-rooted mission, with the university known for working closely with regional students from the tri-state Ohio Valley area.
After graduation
Nursing and health-sciences graduates feed directly into regional hospital systems throughout the upper Ohio Valley, giving Wheeling a strong local placement pipeline in healthcare fields.
Worth knowing
Wheeling underwent a name change from Wheeling Jesuit University amid financial restructuring, so students should know it retains its Catholic identity and Jesuit-influenced mission without operating under the same formal Jesuit sponsorship structure it once had.
