Long Island University operates two distinct main campuses under one university umbrella: LIU Post, spread across a former Gold Coast estate on Long Island, and LIU Brooklyn, in the middle of downtown Brooklyn. The two campuses function almost as separate colleges in feel — one suburban and traditionally residential, the other urban and commuter-heavy — while sharing programs and a single administration.
Pharmacy, health professions, and veterinary medicine are notable strengths — LIU opened one of the relatively few new veterinary schools in the country in recent years, a rare addition to the field. Arts programs, including performing arts at the Brooklyn campus, are another established area, and the university runs sizable pharmacy and health-sciences colleges relative to its overall size.
LIU Post's estate-like campus includes formal gardens and historic buildings from its Gold Coast origins, a distinctly different atmosphere from LIU Brooklyn's dense urban blocks a short subway ride from Manhattan. Students choosing between the two campuses are choosing between genuinely different college experiences, not just a location.
Admission varies by program, with pharmacy and veterinary tracks more competitive and structured than general undergraduate admission, which is comparatively accessible.
Prospective students should treat LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn as distinct decisions — campus culture, housing, and daily life differ substantially between them despite the shared university name and administration.
