The Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico is the island's public college of art and design, housed in a historic building at the entrance to Old San Juan. It is Puerto Rico's principal institution for training visual artists and designers, and instruction is conducted primarily in Spanish.
The curriculum covers fine arts, industrial and fashion design, digital media, and art education, with a strong studio-based approach — students spend significant time in hands-on production rather than in lecture-based coursework. Faculty are largely working artists and designers themselves, connected to Puerto Rico's art and design community.
The Old San Juan location places students inside one of the most historic urban settings in the Caribbean, and the school's small size means students across disciplines interact closely; the surrounding gallery and design scene in and around Old San Juan is a natural extension of campus life.
Because instruction is primarily in Spanish and the school is deeply tied to Puerto Rico's own art and design institutions, it is a stronger fit for a student fluent in Spanish and interested in staying connected to the island's creative industries than for a mainland applicant looking for a conventional English-language art school experience.
