Adelphi University is a private university in Garden City, on Long Island about an hour from Manhattan by commuter rail. It maintains a green, arboretum-designated campus that gives it a traditional collegiate feel while still keeping New York City within easy reach, drawing a student body mixing residential and commuter students largely from the New York metro area.
Nursing, psychology, education, and performing arts are Adelphi's most established programs, each with a long-standing reputation in the New York region specifically. Class sizes tend to be moderate, supporting more individual faculty attention than a large public university would offer in the same fields.
The arboretum campus gives Adelphi a notably landscaped, traditional look uncommon this close to New York City, and the mix of residential and commuter students creates a campus culture that is neither fully residential nor fully commuter in feel. Manhattan's museums, theater, and internship opportunities are readily accessible by train.
Admission is holistic but moderately accessible relative to Manhattan's most selective private universities, with essays and recommendations weighed alongside academic record.
Students considering Adelphi should know its proximity to Manhattan is a genuine academic and social asset — internships and cultural access are realistic parts of student life, not just a selling point — while the campus itself remains a distinct, quieter suburban environment.
