Antioch University is a multi-campus institution serving adult and graduate students, headquartered in Yellow Springs, Ohio but operating largely as a distributed system rather than one traditional campus — a separate institution from the historic undergraduate Antioch College, though both trace back to the same 19th-century progressive-education lineage. Its programs are almost entirely aimed at working adults completing bachelor's degrees or pursuing graduate study in fields like psychology, education, and organizational leadership, delivered through low-residency, cohort-based, or online formats rather than a conventional residential experience.
Programs favor competency-based and experiential learning over lecture-heavy coursework, often built around cohorts that move through a degree together and individualized learning plans rather than a fixed catalog of required courses. Psychology and counseling programs are a particular strength across the Antioch system, along with education, environmental studies, and leadership degrees, and many programs are structured for people already working full time rather than full-time students on a traditional timeline.
Graduates tend to move into helping professions — counseling, social work, teaching, and nonprofit or public-sector leadership — reflecting the university's practitioner-oriented programs. Because many students enroll while already working in these fields, the degree often functions as a credential and skill upgrade for an existing career path rather than a first step into the workforce.
Antioch's progressive, social-justice-oriented identity runs through its curriculum and campus culture, tracing back to a long history of activism and experimentation in higher education. Because the university is built around adult and graduate learners, prospective high schoolers should understand this is not a typical residential undergraduate experience — most programs assume some work or life experience already, and campus life in the traditional sense is limited or nonexistent at most locations.
