Overview

The University of St. Thomas is a private Catholic university and the largest private university in Minnesota, with its original campus along St. Paul's residential Summit Avenue and a second, business-focused campus in downtown Minneapolis. It combines a Catholic mission with a strong professional and corporate orientation unusual among faith-based schools of its size.

Academics

The Opus College of Business is the university's signature program, built on deep, longstanding ties to Twin Cities corporations that recruit heavily from St. Thomas and fund named facilities and endowed chairs. Engineering and education are also established programs, and the university's Catholic identity shows up in required theology and philosophy coursework alongside a mission-oriented general-education core.

Campus & student life

Students split time between the leafy Summit Avenue campus and the Minneapolis downtown campus, giving the university a foothold in both of the Twin Cities' distinct identities. St. Thomas made a notable, closely watched jump from Division III to Division I athletics in the early 2020s, a significant shift for a school its size that has reshaped its athletics culture and recruiting.

Getting in

Admission is holistic, and the university's Catholic mission and community-oriented culture are part of what it looks for in applicants, though it is not restrictive about religious background — many admitted students are not Catholic.

After graduation

The Opus College of Business's local corporate ties translate into strong internship and placement pipelines with Twin Cities employers, and the alumni network is unusually concentrated and active within Minnesota's business community.

Worth knowing

The Division I athletics move is genuinely unusual — most schools of St. Thomas's size and type stay in Division III — and it has noticeably changed the athletics experience and campus energy since the transition.
