Augusta University is Georgia's designated health-sciences university, built around the Medical College of Georgia, one of the country's older medical schools, and a set of affiliated health-profession colleges. The campus sits along the Savannah River in the state's second-oldest city, giving the university a public mission distinct from the state's flagship or land-grant institutions. Undergraduate life is organized heavily around pre-health tracks even for students outside nursing or allied health.
Nursing, respiratory therapy, radiologic sciences, and other allied-health majors are the strongest undergraduate offerings, feeding directly into the university's own graduate and professional programs on the same campus. A cybersecurity program has grown alongside the Army Cyber Command presence at nearby Fort Eisenhower, giving Augusta a technology niche unusual for a health-sciences university. Pre-med students benefit from proximity to the medical school and its teaching hospital, though undergraduate admission to the medical college itself is a separate, competitive step.
The university operates two main campuses a few miles apart, splitting student life somewhat between a historic downtown-adjacent campus and a newer health-sciences campus. Many undergraduates commute or live in off-campus housing rather than a large traditional dorm system. Athletics compete at the Division II level, and Augusta's identity as a golf city is more a civic backdrop than a campus tradition.
Admission is straightforward and grade-driven for most undergraduate programs, though competitive health-profession tracks like nursing carry their own secondary application once a student is enrolled. Essays play a minor role in general admission.
Graduates in nursing and allied health have a direct local hiring pipeline through the university's own teaching hospital and the broader Augusta health system, one of the region's largest employers. Pre-med students who do not continue on to the medical college often pursue physician-assistant or other health graduate programs elsewhere.
Students aiming for nursing or allied health should expect a two-step process: general university admission followed by a competitive program application later, so a strong first year matters. The cybersecurity program's ties to Fort Eisenhower can open internship and clearance-track opportunities uncommon at other regional universities.
