Muskingum University is a private university in New Concord, Ohio, historically tied to the Presbyterian church, in the small village where astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn grew up and later returned to teach. That connection is a point of local and institutional pride, and the university's hilly village campus retains a strong tradition of close, personal faculty attention built into its identity.
Education, nursing, and the sciences are core strengths, and the university is particularly known for its PLUS Program, a long-established, nationally recognized support program for students with diagnosed learning disabilities — a genuinely distinctive offering that draws students specifically for that support structure rather than as an afterthought accommodation. Small classes across the university reinforce the personal-attention model even outside the PLUS Program.
The village of New Concord is small and quiet, and campus life centers on the hilly, walkable Muskingum campus itself rather than an off-campus town scene. The John Glenn connection is marked on campus and remains a source of institutional identity.
Admission is holistic and accessible, and students applying specifically to the PLUS Program go through an additional, separate application and interview process beyond standard admission.
Education and nursing graduates find steady regional placement, and PLUS Program alumni frequently credit the program's support structure with their persistence to graduation and beyond.
