Webster University is a private university based in Webster Groves, a St. Louis suburb, with an unusual network of international campuses in cities including Geneva, Vienna, and Leiden. That global network, more than any single program, defines the university's identity.
Conservatory-style performing arts and media programs are established strengths, run through the university's college of fine arts, alongside business programs that draw on the international campus network for global coursework. Study abroad is not a bolt-on program here but a structural feature — students can take courses at Webster's own campuses overseas rather than through a third-party partner.
The main Webster Groves campus is suburban and residential, a short distance from downtown St. Louis. The university's collegiate chess team is a genuine point of national distinction, competing for national titles against far larger athletic programs and recruiting seriously at the international level.
Being able to move between Webster's own campuses around the world, rather than through outside study-abroad partnerships, is a real structural advantage for students who want international experience built into a normal degree path. The chess program's success is a legitimate and long-running institutional strength, not a novelty.
