The newest and smallest member of Florida's state university system, in Lakeland, dedicated entirely to STEM — engineering, computer science, and data science, with no other majors offered. The main academic building, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is a genuine architectural landmark with a distinctive louvered roof.
Every program is applied and industry-connected, with small cohorts, project-based coursework, and required internships or co-ops built into the curriculum rather than left optional. There is no traditional liberal-arts core; the focus stays narrowly technical throughout.
A small, young campus, opened in 2014, in central Florida between Tampa and Orlando, still building the traditions and residential culture that older schools accumulate over decades. Social life centers more on tight major-based cohorts than on a large, diffuse campus community.
The single-purpose STEM mission makes this a strong fit only for students already certain they want engineering, computer science, or data science — there is no path into a humanities or social-science major without transferring elsewhere.
