Asbury University is a Christian university in Wilmore, Kentucky, in the Wesleyan-holiness tradition. It is independent but historically and geographically tied to the neighboring Asbury Theological Seminary, a separate graduate institution that shares the small town and much of its evangelical character. Asbury drew brief worldwide attention in February 2023 when a student chapel service extended for weeks into a spontaneous revival that drew visitors from across the country.
The university is known for media and communications, and for an unusual and well-regarded equine studies program that takes advantage of the surrounding Kentucky bluegrass horse country. Bible and theology coursework runs through the curriculum regardless of major, consistent with its Wesleyan-holiness identity.
Campus life centers on a spiritually intense, chapel-driven community life, with expectations around worship and conduct that go further than at many other Christian universities. The 2023 revival, while an unusual event, was consistent with the intensity of the campus's ordinary religious culture rather than a total departure from it.
The equine studies program and the surrounding bluegrass horse country make Asbury a genuine option for students serious about equine careers, not just a curiosity. Prospective students should also understand Asbury University and Asbury Theological Seminary are separate institutions that happen to share a small town and a name.
