Yeshiva University in New York City is the flagship institution of Modern Orthodox Judaism in American higher education, built around a dual curriculum that combines intensive Torah study with a full secular undergraduate program. It is not simply a Jewish-affiliated university but an institution organized specifically around living out Modern Orthodox observance alongside rigorous academics.
Undergraduates split their day between Judaic studies, Talmud, Bible, Jewish law and thought, and secular coursework in business, the sciences, and liberal arts, a structure that makes for a longer academic day than at most universities. Sy Syms School of Business is a well-regarded professional program, and the sciences have a strong reputation as well, particularly given the university's pipeline into Albert Einstein College of Medicine and other health professional programs.
Men and women attend on separate campuses in Manhattan, the Wilf campus in Washington Heights for men and the Beren campus in midtown for women, a structural feature that shapes social life, housing, and even which secular courses are taught where. Religious observance, kosher dining, and Shabbat structure the rhythm of campus life for essentially the entire student body, not a subset of it.
Applicants are expected to be Modern Orthodox or seriously observant Jews seeking an institution built around that identity, and the review considers religious commitment and yeshiva or day-school background alongside academic credentials.
Graduates have a particularly strong pipeline into medicine, law, and business, helped by the university's reputation and dense alumni networks within American Jewish professional communities, and pre-med students benefit from close ties to Einstein College of Medicine.
The single-sex, separate-campus structure is a defining and non-negotiable feature of the undergraduate experience, not an option among several — prospective students should understand Yeshiva's model before applying, since it differs fundamentally from a coeducational university.
